What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a method of administering pure oxygen at greater than atmospheric pressure to a patient in order to improve or correct conditions. Our Sechrist monochamber pressurizes using pure oxygen. We do not use compressed air along with oxygen by mask. By providing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber we are able to deliver 10 - 15 times more oxygen than if delivered at sea level or at normal atmospheric levels. Some of the effects this has are: the promotion new blood vessel growth, decrease in swelling and inflammation, deactivation of toxins, increase in the bodyʼs ability to fight infections, clearing of toxins and metabolic waste products, and improvement in the rate of healing. HBOT should be used to compliment conventional therapies.
What Conditions Can Be Treated With HBOT?
HBOT has been traditionally used in the United States for a narrow list of 13 indications typically reimbursed by insurance companies.
Air or Gas Embolism
Anemia
Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Inhalation
Crush Injury
Decompression Sickness (The Bends)
Gas Gangrene
Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections
Osteomyelitis
Radiation Tissue Damage
Refractory Mycoses
Select Problem Wounds (often diabetes related)
Skin Grafts and Flap
Additionally, thermal Burns and other medical conditions that have been shown to benefit from HBOT are:
Elective plastic surgery recovery. Healing from laser or traditional types of plastic surgery
Stroke: acute or post
Multiple Sclerosis: acute, relapsing, remitting, and chronic
Migraine Headaches
Near Drowning
Traumatic Brain Injury
Peripheral Neuropathy
Chronic Fatigue
Cerebral Palsy
Peripheral Vascular Disease
Immune System BuildingAutism
Sports InjuriesFrost Bite
Altitude Sickness
RSDMyocardial Infarction (heart attack)
Parkinsonʼs Disease
Lyme Disease
Chemotherapy recoveryHyperbaric oxygen therapy has been proven effective in treating many conditions in which poor circulation plays a role. In addition to increasing the delivery of oxygen throughout the body, HBOT enhances the white blood cells ability to fight infection, helps the body build new connective tissue, and kills certain types of harmful bacteria.HBOT is generally used as an adjunctive therapy. It does not compete with or replace other treatment methods, rather it enhances your bodyʼs ability to heal and compliments your on going Physical Therapies, Preventive, and alternative treatments. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is considered Investigational, Experimental, or Off Label in regards to some of the above conditions. Other medical conditions that have been shown to benefit from HBOT are:

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Its Role in Sports Medicine
In recent years, professional and college sports teams have started using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to treat sports injuries. From muscle contusions and ankle sprains to delayed-onset muscle soreness, HBOT has been used to facilitate soft-tissue healing. To minimize the time between injury and HBOT treatment, some professional sports teams have on-site hyperbaric oxygen chambers. HBOT is used in a sports medicine setting to reduce hypoxia and edema and appears to be particularly effective for treating crush injuries and acute traumatic peripheral ischemia. HBOT has also been used to treatjoint, muscle, ligament, and tendon injuries such as acute ankle injuries.
